My English Language Learning Journey
English had been my pride and it had also been my disgrace.
The last time the language intimidated me was when I failed my QET examination.
But now, it is for the same language that I am excited and determined. Without my awareness, English has started its journey in my life.
My first few words were not English; perhaps that is why I am
doing this assignment. I was taught both Tamil and English. I used Tamil for
communicating and English for watching Cartoon Network. I was convinced that my
English was really good and that it was better than that of my father, a successful
engineer. This reminds me of the incident of how I quarrelled with my father,
arguing that “these is” is correct and “these are” was wrong while doing my
primary one English homework.
I was in the fifth grade, when I realised that my grades in
English were falling. So did I start hating English then? We have often heard
kids, or even grown-ups, telling that they like a particular subject because
they like their teacher.I was one of them. I loved my primary school English teacher, did all works given and longed for praises. However, this love did not
help me much in PSLE.
My battle
with the English language had since then started. I survived, yet with wounds
of stress and embarrassment. I perceived my futile efforts in mastering this subject
after having failed my QET. While I was doing this assignment, I realised that I
just did not have the time and the willingness to change the way of learning
English. After having to take ES1102, I am determined to make my English journey
successful.

Thank you, Pryanga, for this clear, concise and open reflection. I appreciate the way you have described a number of experiences to illustrate how your English learning has turned into an adversarial relationship. Clearly though, that doesn't need to be the case. You have lots of fluency, and you have mentioned your determination. That's a strong combination.
ReplyDeleteThere are a few areas in this post that we can look at as a start for learning:
1) my disesteem > a word?
2) English, alone had developed its own stance in my life, shaping it into a never ending journey. > huh?
3) My first few words were not English, perhaps that is why I am doing this assignment. (run on sentence)
4) ...my grades in English was falling. > (subject verb agreement)
5) We have often heard kids telling, or even grown-ups, that they like a particular subject because they like their teacher. > odd syntax…
6) Teacher > (capitalization)
7) My battle with the English language has since then started. > (verb tense)
I appreciate your effort!
Thank you very much Sir! I'm excited for my next assignment.
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your reflection! I find the anecdotes you used to be interesting and hilarious. It makes your reflection more expressive and definitely gave me a better me a better understanding of your learning journey.
Hi Pryanga, reading your essays is so enjoyable. I like your essay structure. It is clear and easy to understand.
ReplyDeleteI always thought that "these are" is the correct grammar, since these is used for plural objects. Isn't it?
It is a nice essay. Looking forward to read more of your essays.
